Jim is an intellectual property lawyer involved in the preparation, prosecution and ongoing development of patents and patent portfolios. He is also involved in the analysis of the scope and validity of patents pertaining to the manufacture and marketing of products, licensing and strategic planning. Jim’s clients appreciate that he truly cares about their inventions, and about getting them useful, valuable and comprehensive patent protection. Whether the scope of attainable patent protection is narrow or broad, Jim’s goal is to consistently prepare and prosecute patent applications which are both useful and defensible, and can stand the test of time. On many occasions, Jim’s patents have represented the real, core value of his client’s company, forming the basis for critical funding.

After decades of intellectual property law practice, Jim continues to enjoy learning about new technologies and scientific innovations. His innate curiosity about how things work was one of the reasons he became a patent attorney. As a result, Jim picks up even a wide range of complicated technologies and complex innovations, very quickly. As you would expect, the technical focus of Jim’s practice is both broad and deep, and ranges from sawmill equipment to medical devices.

In the medical device field, Jim has been involved in patents related to catheters, drug delivery devices, stents, tumor removal devices and radiation therapy devices, to name only a few. Jim is also experienced in obtaining patent protection in other areas of technology, a sampling of which includes photovoltaic systems, “smart” thermostats, phase change memory devices and watercraft sails. He also offers special expertise in protecting ornamental designs through the use of design patents. Whether Jim is advising on integrated circuit manufacturing technologies or methods for producing raisins, he has consistently delivered the practical advice needed for his clients to achieve both their long and short term commercial objectives.

Jim served as Vice President for Inventors of California, as an Arbitrator for the Bar Association of San Francisco’s Attorney-Client Fee Dispute Committee, and as a Director of PilotLegis, a professional liability risk purchasing group for mid-sized law firms. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the American Intellectual Property Law Association.

Jim holds a B.S.M.E., with Distinction, and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and is a member of Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma.  Jim holds a J.D. from Hastings College of the Law. He is admitted to practice law in California, as well as registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Jim also served as a Captain in the United States Army Judge Advocate General Corps.  Prior to joining HBW, Jim was an Associate and then a Partner with Townsend and Townsend and Crew LLP in the San Francisco and Palo Alto offices. In addition, Jim was head of the Mechanical Prosecution Group at Townsend.
