Randy is a Patent Engineer who joined HBW in 2014. Prior to joining the firm, Randy spent more than 20 years as an IT executive in health care and other industries, leading teams and solutions to drive mobility, cloud, big data, security, compliance, and other high technology solutions in firms such as Kaiser Permanente, Nestle USA, Wells Fargo Bank, and SBC, among others. Randy specializes in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, as well as the analysis of the scope and validity of patents.

Randy is steadfastly focused on bringing practical solutions to even the most complex scenarios. Randy's ability to synthesize problems into components that can be both understood and overcome is supported by his ability to translate tech speak into straight talk. Because Randy truly enjoys the engineering and analytical aspects of his job, he remains ever-excited about new products, ideas, innovations and cutting-edge technologies.

Randy holds a Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems and Computer Science, Cum Laude, and an M.B.A. with an emphasis on decision support systems from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Randy also holds numerous technology certifications and is Six Sigma and ITIL certified. While at McGill, Randy developed a robotic arm with six degrees of freedom for Muscular Dystrophy patients; developed electronics for brainwave analysis for spatial recognition within the Department of Psychiatry; and developed an expert system for heart transplants and cardio surgery for anesthesiology. Randy also participated in a joint program with NASA and the Canadian Aerospace Program to develop two medical experiments, which tested the effect of weightlessness on the inner ear and on the shutter speed of the eye for the U.S. space shuttle program.

Randy is the author of a health care patent application entitled "Method & System for Simulating Healthcare Data" (2003). In the 1990s, he engineered and authored "The ModelOffice® Methodology" (1996), the "EveryOffice® Toolkit" (1997), and the "ReachThrough® Methology" (1998) supporting large scale IT infrastructure and web application development for large enterprises. He is also the author of multiple IT and health care publications including "Order Entry/Result Reporting using HL7 in a CICS Environment" (1992) and "Ramp-up Pulse Controls using the 74LS77 D Latch Chip for Stepping Motors used in Robotic Arm Application" (1986).

Randy is an experienced entrepreneur, and has received multiple awards for the three successful IT businesses he has built and sold. Working as an entrepreneur himself, Randy understands from personal experience what his clients face on a daily basis when seeking to own and leverage their IP assets, and to operate their businesses in the most efficient manner possible.

Randy is also an inventor, a pilot, and a scuba diver. Before joining the IT industry, Randy received a degree from the Culinary Institute of America, and was an international chef for 6 years working for Paul Bocuse in Rio de Janiero, with Charles Berrier (trois etoile) in Tour, France, and in Canada and the United States. He speaks English, French, and Portuguese.
