Angela is a Patent Engineer who joined HBW in 2014. She specializes in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, and the analysis of the scope and validity of patents. As excited about cutting-edge technology as the inventors she serves, Angela's patent prosecution and counseling experience spans a wide range of computer science and engineering disciplines. Most recently, her focus has been on patents pertaining to the Internet of Things (IOTs).

Prior to joining the firm, Angela spent more than two decades as an IT professional, an Electrical Engineer at IBM, a Computer Engineering adjunct faculty member at the University of CA at Santa Cruz, and as a Process Analyst for UC Santa Cruz. Her depth and breadth of experience in computer engineering allows her to understand even the most complicated technologies and innovations. Inventors appreciate that Angela can quickly comprehend even the most complex ideas, and entrepreneurs value that she can articulate such technologies in laymen's terms.

As an Associate Test Engineer for IBM, Angela worked on designing and building real time microprocessor-based test equipment, where she was responsible for two stand-alone systems, including a keyboard logic card tester and a camera focusing system for automated teller machines. Angela also created and managed the technical libraries for multiple IT companies, including Zayante and Xyratex.

In addition, Angela documented university business processes for UC Santa Cruz (procurement, risk services, print services, receiving services, and human resources) over a 15 year span. Notably, she designed University websites, completed process analysis projects, and implemented a content management system. Angela completed a series of Financial Training Manuals and training materials for the UCSC e-commerce system implementation. She also served as a Curriculum Manager for the Academy for College Excellence, managing copyright requirements and developing and distributing curriculum for under-privileged community college students.

Angela holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Cum Laude, from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. While at UNCC, Angela developed an integrated system for programming memory devices. Angela completed a Master of Science in Computer and Biomedical Engineering, Cum Laude, from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. While at Carnegie Mellon, she researched and published "Effects of Frequency Modulation on Complex Pitch Perception." While in Pittsburgh, Angela developed process control software for the CMU chemistry department, implementing robot-arm software to automate organic chemistry experiments in the lab.

Angela has taught both digital design and analog design courses for the Computer Engineering Department at UC Santa Cruz. She is an experienced engineer, writer, and stained glass artist, as well as a musician who has performed with Kuzanga Marimba since 1994.
